VA rating calculator

VA combined ratings don't add up. We do the real math.

Two 50% ratings aren't 100% — the VA uses a "whole person" formula that surprises almost everyone. Add your conditions below to see your true combined rating and your estimated 2026 monthly payment. Free and instant.

    The calculator

    Add your conditions.

Enter each condition's rating exactly as the VA assigned it (or your best estimate). The calculator applies the official 38 CFR §4.25 combined-ratings formula.

    Your rated conditions

Pick a percentage, optionally name the condition, and add it.

Dependents only change pay at a combined rating of 30% or higher. Estimate covers a spouse and children under 18; dependent parents, school-age children 18+, Aid & Attendance, and SMC can add more.

Can't work because of your conditions?

TDIU pays the 100% rate without a 100% rating.

Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability is one of the most under-claimed benefits in the VA system.

      What it pays

The full 100% rate — $3,938.58/month (more with dependents) — even though your combined rating stays at 60, 70, 80, or 90%. If your service-connected conditions keep you from holding substantially gainful work, VA pays you as if you were rated 100%.

      Who qualifies

Schedular TDIU needs one condition rated 60%+, or a combined 70%+ with at least one condition at 40%+ — and evidence you can't maintain substantially gainful employment because of those conditions. Below the thresholds, extraschedular TDIU is still possible but harder. Marginal work (below the poverty threshold) doesn't disqualify you.

      How to apply

File VA Form 21-8940 (your work and education history) and have each employer from the last five years complete Form 21-4192. Strongest evidence: a doctor's opinion linking your conditions to your inability to work, SSDI records if you have them, and termination or accommodation records.

      Beyond the monthly check

      What a 100% P&T rating unlocks.

Permanent & Total status opens benefits for your whole family that no one mails you a list of. If your decision letter says "no future exams scheduled," you're likely P&T.

      For your family

CHAMPVA health coverage for your spouse and kids (Form 10-10d) and Chapter 35 education — $1,574/month for 36 months of school for each dependent (Form 22-5490).

      For your wallet

Property tax exemptions in most states — often full exemption at 100% (see your state's rules) — plus no VA home-loan funding fee (that's true at any compensable rating and saves thousands), free VA dental care, and commissary, exchange, and MWR access — which every service-connected veteran has had since 2020, at any rating.

      Protection & insurance

After 10 years, service connection can't be severed except for fraud; after 20 years at a rating, it can't be reduced below that level. Any service-connected rating (even 0%) also unlocks VALife — guaranteed-acceptance whole life insurance up to $40,000, no exam, no health questions, for veterans 80 and under.
